Krang Suri Falls

The Sapphire Pool — A Magical Turquoise Waterfall Hidden in the Jaintia Hills

Krang Suri Falls is tucked away in the Amlarem Civil Sub-Division of the West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, located at 25.1521°N, 92.4015°E. Distinct from the sheer drops of Cherrapunji's waterfalls, Krang Suri is famous for its vibrant, almost unnaturally blue-colored water set against a perfectly flat, wide rock lip. Surrounded by thick green forest and accessed via a beautiful pathway paved with local stone, it is widely considered one of the most aesthetically perfect waterfalls in India.

Natural Features & Geography

The Turquoise Water

The most striking feature of Krang Suri is the deep blue, turquoise hue of its plunge pool. This color is caused by a combination of the area's rich limestone geology, the lack of silt in the dry season, and the specific way sunlight reflects off the shallow, clear riverbed just before the drop. Because the river flows gently over a wide lip rather than plunging violently, the pool below remains serene and vividly colored.

The Stonework Path

Unlike many offbeat destinations that suffer from poor infrastructure, the descent to Krang Suri is managed beautifully. The local district administration constructed the access pathway using naturally hewn stones in varying shades of grey, red, and brown, carefully sourced so as not to disrupt the forest aesthetic. This 20-minute walk down to the falls through the jungle is as pleasant as the destination itself.

Swimming and Access

Krang Suri is unique because it is one of the few major waterfalls in Meghalaya where swimming is actively encouraged and extremely safe (during the dry season). The pool is large, calm, and inviting. The local authority manages a life-jacket rental booth at the base of the falls. Wearing a life jacket is strictly mandatory to enter the water, regardless of your swimming ability, ensuring a zero-fatality record while allowing visitors to swim right under the curtain of falling water.

Did You Know?

Behind the curtain of falling water at Krang Suri is a naturally formed hollow cave walkway. Visitors can carefully walk on the wet rocks directly behind the waterfall, allowing you to look out through the falling curtain of turquoise water to the pool — an incredible experience and a fantastic photo opportunity.

Travel Guide to Krang Suri

How to Reach

From Jowai: The nearest major town is Jowai (about 30 km away). The drive takes around 1 hour via the Jowai-Amlarem-Dawki road.

From Shillong: It's a longer drive of about ~90 km (approx 3 hours). It's best combined with a trip to Dawki or as part of a tour of the Jaintia Hills.

Best Time to Visit

November to April: This is the ideal time to see the striking blue water and swim safely. The flow is gentle, and the weather is pleasant.

Monsoon (June to Sept): The volume of water increases drastically. The water turns brown from mud, swimming is completely forbidden, and the picturesque blue color disappears—though the falls are still powerful to look at.

Local Attractions Nearby

Dawki / Umngot River: 30 km — The crystal clear river border town.

Nartiang Monoliths: 55 km — An impressive collection of ancient Megalithic stones near Jowai.

Tips for Visitors

Bring Swimwear: You will definitely want to get in the water. There are small, basic changing rooms built near the base of the falls for visitors to use.
Life Jackets are Mandatory: Do not argue with the local guards; if you want to enter the water, you must rent (for a nominal fee of ~₹50-100) and wear a life jacket.
Visit Mid-Day: Because the falls are located in a depression surrounded by forest, the sunlight only hits the pool directly around midday. Visit between 11 AM and 2 PM to see the bluest water.
Walk Behind the Falls: Don't just swim; make sure you safely navigate the rocky lip behind the falling water for the best "behind the scenes" view of Krang Suri.
